West Highland Way Race
Conditions for this years’ West Highland Way race were described as ‘horrendous’, with torrential rain right from the start making the going very difficult for competitors and support crews alike. Parts of the trail were described as being more akin to a stream rather than the familiar 95 miles of well used walkers’ path. Of the 172 who lined up at Milngavie for the 01:00am start there were 119 who crossed the finish line at Fort William with 8 people having had enough by the 1st checkpoint!....
Karrimor Great Trail Challenge Home Countries International
Jo Zakrzewski was more than a little apprehensive as to whether she would have any speed left in her legs after running Comrades less than two weeks ago, but headed off down to the Lake District this weekend to take up the invite to race in a Scottish vest for the first time since declaring for Scotland. The event was the Home Countries International, and was being run as part of the Karrimor Great Trail Challenge in Keswick...
Dalbeattie Civic Daze
Sunday saw the inaugural running of the Dalbeattie 10K and Half Marathon. There are often teething problems with new events, from which lessons can be learnt for the next year, but unfortunately the weather is a variable beyond the control of any race organiser. The heavy rains and hence risk of flooding meant that there had to be a last minute change to the morning's 10K course, which seemed to be generally approved of by most participants as the route then became a straight out and back avoiding the promised hill, though unfortunately it meant that the course was no longer an accurately measured 10K. Luckily the afternoon's half-marathon route was not affected, and so remained a lovely scenic course.
Durisdeer Hill Race
The Durisdeer course is recorded as 16km with 1150m of climb, although competitors with GPS report that it measures slightly shorter. There are 3 main phases of the course: the first 2km sees a rapid 350m ascent of Black Hill, with the course then dropping steeply down to a road and river crossing at about the starting level. The next 5km loops round the back of Steygail, with 2 ascents of 120m and 230m over passes along the way. The final 6km starts with a 370m climb to Well Hill, followed by an undulating ridge run to Black Hill before descending to the finish along the route of the initial climb.
