Grasmere Gallop

12/06/2011

On Sunday 12th June 2011, three Dumfries Running Club members ventured to the Lake District to take their places amongst the 250 runners on the start line of the resurrected Grasmere Gallop 10K. The National Trust rangers have changed the route from previous years so that it now follows a circuit leaving Grasmere village for a short section along B roads before enjoying some of the best views in the Lakes from a sustainable route over footpaths and bridleways in the Grasmere and Rydal area.

Underfoot conditions on the undulating course were variable with road, shale, rocky and muddy sections – and even a 25m water dash for those brave enough to attempt it!

Jonathan Dale and Jo Zakrzewski started out together with Jo having the edge on the climbs, but Jonathan stretching out a slight advantage on the descents.

Once back to Grasmere there was a circuit of the sports field to contend with and Jonathan's family encouraged him into the finish for a splendid 7th place in a time of 41:34 with Jo crossing the line only 18 seconds later in a tremendous 9th place and in doing so easily winning the prize for 1st lady. Audrey Brown seemed to love every minute of the experience of her first trail race finishing 16th in her category in a time of 61:49, sporting a grin on her face and setting herself a target of breaking the hour next year.

All three Dumfries runners commented that they had thoroughly enjoyed the race, including the water dash, but were especially enthusiastic in their praise of the free drinks and tray bakes available at the finish.
