Dumfries & Galloway 5K Track Race

21/06/2011

The 5k track championships at the David Keswick Centre in Dumfries on Tuesday 21st June were the final event of the Dumfries and Galloway Athletic championships. This has not been run for several years and many thanks are due to John Allison of Dumfries and Galloway council and Jim Callander of Nithsdale AC for making sure the event was able to go ahead.

On a cold wet night, a field of 20 runners, all bar one members of DRC lined up for the novel experience of twelve and a half laps of the 400 metre track and it was encouraging to see a wide spectrum of club members taking part with everyone getting the benefit of sharp focussed speed training ideal for longer races later in the year. The fastest runner was Mickey Breen in 16.12 mins and he held off Ross Bark of Galloway Harriers by 18 seconds with Steven Smith a further 46 seconds behind. The first woman was Jo Zakrzewski in an excellent 18.11 who held off the fast finishing Lisa Finlay by 15 seconds with Adam Dickie a further 10 seconds behind. Simon Mortlock in 19.09 held off Les Hill on the finishing straight in 19.27 and Sandy Shankland in 19.48 crossed the line 4 seconds before Alastair Bloxham and Sian Finlay showed she is really coming back into form in 20.04. In a sprint to the line one second separated three runners with Mike Jardine in 21.19 beating Mark Johnston and Maureen Dickson by the tiniest of margins with Susan Gallagher 15 seconds behind. Kerry Walker ran well in 22.07 and was one minute in front of Carla Svensson with Gemma Leadbetter a couple of strides behind. Margaret Gray and Susan Callander epitomised the spirit of the event and ran together in 26.54 and received a well deserved round of applause from all other runners when they crossed the line. Dougie Brown as assistant lap counter with Jim Callander manfully managed the complex task of making sure everyone completed the required number of laps and Jim realised that it is doubly important to do this correctly if your wife is one of the competitors!
