Castle Douglas 5 mile race

08/08/2011

This race is always a real favourite of Dumfries Running Club members and this year was no exception where 36 club members formed nearly 50% of the field for a short and sharp run round Carlingwark Loch.

With a downhill start towards Gelston that can catch out inexperienced runners, the undulating middle section back to Castle Douglas is challenging and the tree lined finish back at the start seems to take ages to arrive.
Expertly organised as usual by Bob Green and Dougie Milligan, all the runners were given a pre race safety briefing which raised a laugh as several front runners went off course two years ago.

Steven Smith shrugged off his previous poor navigation by powering home to victory in 28.32 with Alan Baxter in 29.21 heading off Kevin Conchar by 4 seconds with Chris Woods a further 18 seconds off this fast pace. First woman Lisa Finlay improved her PB by a second in an excellent 5th place in 29.48, five seconds in front of Graeme Cross who again got the better of Adam Dickie by less than 50 metres with Jim Buchanan two seconds behind. In fact the first 8 places were filled by DRC members, something that has never happened before.

Simon Mortlock had an excellent run in 11th place in 31.08 ahead of Les Hill and Sandy Shankland. Allan Manson ran powerfully in 32.50 nearly a minute in front of Allie Wilson who had an excellent run as second woman in 33.34, Sian Finlay was delighted with a 34.18 finish as she was a minute in front of newcomer Peter McGill who himself headed off a trio of Maureen Dickson, Mark Johnston and Tom McCaulay by less than 30 seconds.

Steve McQueen had a spirited run in 36.32 heading off Stephen Mohan by 22 seconds and Marian McPhail in 39.06 nudged in front of John Jarvie and Kerry Walker by 14 and 21 seconds respectively. Gemma Leadbetter in 41.25 ran well as did debutante Jackie Kerr in 42.19 with Stephen Miles less than 30 metres adrift. Sue Jeffries and Val Coltart ran together in 43.07 as did Margaret Gray and Susan Callander who were 30 seconds adrift. Teresa Lavery in 44.03 finished over a minute in front of Audrey Brown who was delighted with a strong run in 45.19. Returning holidaymaker Carolyn Johnstone ran well in 45.43 and she was ninety seconds in front of Bill Love with Sarah Millar returning to form in 47.25. Peter Hutchinson in 48.26 was glad to finish at speed in his fitness fightback.
