Gatehouse Gala Race

08/08/2011

The Gatehouse race on Tuesday August 2nd is always a popular race for holidaymakers and locals alike and attracted 19 members of Dumfries Running Club even though the 6.30pm start time makes it pretty difficult for some to make it after a day at work.

The adults have an undulating 6 mile rural route expertly organised by Gerald Macnamara and his team of helpers and children have a 2 mile dash that always attracts keen and enthusiastic participants who enjoy the encouragement of applauding crowds of family members.

In the adult race Steven Smith was the clear winner in 34.44, regaining the title he won in 2009 and he finished 50 seconds in front of David Parrish with Alan Baxter in third place well over a minute behind. Graeme Cross ran well in 4th in 37.42 and finished a clear 100 metres ahead of Adam Dickie. Norman Neilson ran his race the hard way in 39.49 as he cycled 16 miles each way from Dalbeattie to take part. First woman Allie Wilson retained her title in a strong 42.17 and Peter McGill in 43.47 edged out Maureen Dickson by a few strides with Steve McQueen continuing recent positive performances in 44.50.

Kerry Walker was 3 minutes behind Steve but finished the length of the High Street in front of Rab Wilson. Alison Crooks ran brightly in 52.40 finishing a few strides ahead of Sebastian Pflanz and Craig Malcolmson who had no right to look as fresh as they did considering they both had completed a mountain marathon in Switzerland a mere 48 hours before. Margaret Gray and Susan Callander ran together most of the way in 53.40 with Peter Hutchinson in 55.26 delighted to have the strength to overtake several runners in the final stages. In her first club race in many months Christine Clemie thoroughly enjoyed her run in 61.55
