Rome Marathon

18/03/2012

On Sunday Sebastian Planz and Craig Malcolmson joined over 15,000 people on the start line of the Rome Marathon....

The pair reported that they had a great day, soaking up the spectacular atmosphere in one of the most historic cities in the world. The race started at the Coliseum and both were hampered by the congested streets for the first few miles and had to watch out that they didn't trip over cobbles and other competitors. From 10k onwards the field started to spread out a little, allowing them to take in the sights. They skirted St Peter's Square at 15k, just as the Pope was delivering Sunday mass. The historic buildings continued thick and fast, and they were helped on the way by their stalwart supporters Mary and Pat, who managed to shout encouragement at no less than 4 places along the route. Despite being a fairly flat course it was a tough race, with the cobbles and heat taking their toll. Still, Craig managed to achieve his target of sub 3.40 (helped by Seb's Swiss precision timing), finishing with the legendary Malcolmson sprint for the line in 3h 39m 43, 4 secs ahead of Seb. Both seem well on track in the preparation for their respective highlights of the season, the Comrades ultra in South Africa for Craig and West Highland Way for Sebastian..
