Bath time for Jo

11/03/2012

On Sunday 11th March, Jo Zakrzewski joined 12,000 runners on the streets of Bath to take part in the 31st Bath Half Marathon....

There was a strong Elite field this year which provided a gripping race from start to finish, with Kenyan runner Edwin Kiptoo breaking away soon after the first mile to take the victory in a new course record time of 62:01. The Elite women’s field was packed with top runners, using it as a warm up race for the Virgin London Marathon, where the final selection for the one remaining women’s place in the GB women’s team will be made ahead of London 2012. Scotland's Susan Partridge nearly prevented the Kenyan monopoly of wins by finishing only 14 seconds behind Jane Muia in a time of 71:34.

It was the warmest day of the year so far, great news for the huge numbers of sunbathing spectators who lined the route but perhaps not so good for the majority of runners taking part. Jo set off at a fast pace, covering the first 10K in a brisk 36:16 and managed to maintain her pace until around 8 miles, however, a flare up of a recent foot injury caused her to slow slightly over the final miles. Nonetheless Jo was pleased to record a new PB time (and Dumfries Running Club record) of 78:09 for 11th placed lady and a fantastic 96th overall in such a large quality field. A further bonus for Jo was that she was placed 2nd in the LV35 category (behind Liz Yelling and ahead of Nell McAndrew!).

Difficult travel home from races seems to be a recurring theme for the DRC ladies, as due to the large number of competitors and spectators and the numerous road closures necessary for the course, Jo found it took longer to leave Bath than to run around it, resulting in a second race against the clock of the day in order to catch her flight home.
