Lisa Finlay returned to defend her title of the last 2 years and reports on the race.....

This is a popular women's only race in Arbroath, and the 400 places are always filled up months in advance of the run. I was heading to Dundee to stay with some old friends, and was hoping to defend my trophy from last year. The weather was pretty brutal during the inappropriately named 'warm up', when the few brave souls who ventured out were almost hypothermic in the cold rain. However, it did brighten up during the race, and conditions were actually not bad for most of the route. The route is fairly challenging. There is a lot of climbing between miles 1 and 4 and a half, and then the route home is trending downhill. I was feeling in quite good shape, but quickly realized I had serious competition in the shape of an impressive looking Kinross Roadrunner. She overtook me at about 4 miles, and I was chasing her all the way home. In the end, I couldn't quite close the gap, and finished 14 seconds behind in 62.04. I was quite happy with the time, as it is faster than I have ever run on this course before, but I was a little disappointed to lose out in the race. As you might expect there was a feminine touch to the goody bags and prizes, with wine and pretty toiletries for everyone. There was also a lovely buffet in the hall. I think this is a race many club runners would enjoy, and I would recommend it.

I soon forgot about my minor disappointment in the race, as my car broke down on the way home, and the children and I had to wait for 4 hours in Stirling services before we were towed back to Dumfries. Ahh, the life of a runner!!
