Lanzarote Half Marathon

11/12/2019

Glad to briefly escape the Scottish winter, 4 DRC members travelled to Lanzarote for the Half Marathon on Sunday December 8th, part of the annual running festival which includes races at 10k and full Marathon distance.

The weather for the days beforehand had been cool and rainy, a bit unfortunate for acclimatisation as race day was hot and sunny. The route, on promenade and roads, for the most part follows the rocky coastline from Puerto del Carmen to Costa Teguise. A fleet of buses transported runners to the start line and while waiting for the start they were able to cheer on the first of the Marathon runners whose route began and ended at Costa Teguise with Puerto del Carmen at the halfway mark.

Although the race has no major climbs, there are many lesser hills and undulations and hot sun with a stiff breeze made this more challenging and regular water stops were very welcome. The race was ‘chipped’ but only at the finish, so the times were accurate only for the first runners over the start line. None of the group expected a fast time and so weren’t disappointed. Sandy Shankland was first home for the club, in 96:36 which made him 3rd in his category. Les Hill was next in 105:20, followed by Anne Macfarlane in 114:07 making her second in her age category followed by Sean McGleenan in 2:17:13.

After race refreshments were very generous, including draft beer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic as well as plenty of other food and drink. Overall the event was a well organised and enjoyable race with a great atmosphere.
