Jim Buchanan competes in Steeplechase

04/08/2019

Grangemouth Stadium was the venue for the annual Scottish Masters Track & Field Championships, with over 150 athletes competing for medals in five-year age bands.

Jim Buchanan competed in the 3,000m steeplechase, additionally classed as an Open event allowing younger athletes to further their racing experience. The dominant feature is the requirement to hurdle 35 immovable barriers, 91cm height, of which seven instances will be over the water jump (as illustrated).Championship race day is a unique experience. Well organised and marshalled by Scottish Athletics, as an athlete you follow quite rigorous protocols for access to the warm up areas, declaring attendance at least one hour to race time, and waiting in ‘call up area’ with fifteen minutes to go. Having completed over half a dozen steeplechase events, the nerves are now easier to manage.

Jim placed fifth overall across the age groups, in a time of 11-30.69 winning the M50 gold medal for a second time. This was only 26 hundredths off his championship best time set last year, and suggests that the new training regime is producing good results. This plan emphasises two quality track sessions per week, and averages only fifteen miles of running per week, plus some light ‘recovery’ bike rides and gym work.
