Scottish Athletics membership and ‘unaffiliated’

26/04/2017

As with all organisations, Dumfries Running Club is not immune from jargon and rules and regulations that are not clear to new (and existing) members. In the run up to the Holywood Stroll there have been a couple of queries about entry fees which will hopefully be explained below.

On the entry form there are three pricing options

Junior entrants i.e. under 18 are charged a flat £1 fee. The club has made the decision to subsidise any junior entrants.

£3.50 is charged for entrants who are a member of a UK athletics body i.e. Scottish Athletics, England Athletics, Welsh Athletics or Athletics Northern Ireland.

£5.50 is charged for entrants who are unaffiliated to any UK Athletics body.

This is what the 'unaffiliated' part of the form means with two prices, one £3.50 the other being £5.50.

Being a member of Dumfries Running Club does not automatically grant you membership of Scottish Athletics; there is a separate charge of £20 and some members of the club choose to become members, some choose not to.

Scottish Athletics levies a charge on the club for staging events like the Holywood Stroll, they provide a permit and insurance cover amongst other things. This is normally recouped by either club members joining Scottish Athletics at a cost of £20 per year, or in this instance by charging an extra £2 per entry. This is standard practice in all events licensed under any of the UK governing authorities.

There are two tangible benefits to Dumfries Running Club Members joining Scottish Athletics. The first is for the member in that they receive discounted entry for any UK Athletics permitted event. The second benefit is that the number of places the club receives for the London Marathon (it was two this year) is based on number of DRC members who are also members of Scottish Athletics. If you ever wish to apply for the club London Marathon places you must be a member of Scottish Athletics.

Any questions about the above, please feel free to ask any committe member on a club night.
