Lakeland 50

Lakeland 50

The Lakeland 50 is regarded as one the greatest ultra running and walking challenges in Europe. It is run over the second half of the Lakeland 100 Ultra Tour of the Lake District, completing the final 50 miles of the 100 course. The Lakeland 100 starts at 6pm on the Friday evening and the Lakeland 50 starts at 11:30am on the Saturday morning of race weekend. The 50 however is not the ‘easy option’. To complete it requires a huge commitment, firstly to train for it and then to run it. And then you need more commitment and determination to actually finish it when many who have attempted it over the years have not.

Gelston 5 Mile Race

Gelston 5 Mile Race

As one of the most anticipated races of the year for Dumfries Running Club members, 44 club members, one short of the maximum ever number of club participants, took part in the 5 mile road race that was being run in connection with the Civic Week. In total, the club provided almost a third of the entire field taking part and as well as this at least 10 other club members were out on the course marshalling or supporting and in addition a good proportion of the finishing crowd were friends and family of DRC members which gave an added impetus to tired runners.

The Moffat 15k Race 2015

The Moffat 15k Race is always a popular target for many members of Dumfries Running Club and 30 joined the field of 196 for the event on Tuesday, aided by many others who turned out to support along the route.  As this was the 30 th anniversary of this event the organisers were delighted to attract over 40 more runners than last year. Two club runners Sandy Shankland and Jim Grierson took part in the inaugural event and this was a major personal milestone for Jim who has completed every single Moffat run. Effectively the race is split into three separate parts with the first section a relatively easy 4 miles followed by a 200 metre climb within a mile at the Devil’s Beeftub with the reward for tired runners a 4 mile downhill run back to the Ram at Moffat.

Passing on the Baton

Dougie Brown has handed over the baton of DRC website administration after performing this arduous role since 2011 in unstintingly dedicated fashion. We thank him for such a tremendous contribution to DRC and wish him every success in his new freedom! He is and will always be a unique friend of the club.  Your Committee is now in the process of taking forward our website into its next chapter of evolution and progression. It starts from a fine position and looks forward to making it even more beneficial and informative for members and for the wider promotion of our fine running club to the broader community. If you would like to make any suggestions as to how you think our site can be enhanced  just have a word with any member of the committee or in particular with Danny Queen or Al or Sue, our captains. Thanks!  We have lots coming up soon .... Moffat 15k, Gelston 5 mile, Club Barbecue, Marie Curie Fun Run, Haddington Half for the Club Championship, Blackwood 10k trail race and before we know it our very own DRC Half Marathon on 20 September. Keep your eyes posted for details and watch the Calendar. Have a great holiday period and keep running!   Happy Summer! Peter
