Lakeland 50mile Ultra Race

Last Saturday Susan Graham, the secretary of Dumfries Running Club, took part in the greatest sporting challenge she has ever undertaken, the Lakeland 50 mile event. With 3,100 metres of ascent this event requires a huge commitment of effort, navigation and sheer willpower in order to keep going, especially in the latter stage. With a midday start the route which has 6 checkpoints takes in some of the harder to visit but beautiful parts of the Lake District and the key is for competitors to keep moving towards Coniston, the ultimate goal.

For Susan, this was a massive step up for someone who is one of the mainstays of the Monday evening beginners section and she started conservatively in the very warm weather but after Gatesgarth Pass she ended up walking large sections especially as she had 7 hours of darkness to negotiate. In the end she completed the challenge in 23 hours 31 minutes and she is hopeful in the next week or so that her legs get back on speaking terms with the rest of her body!
