Comrades Ultra Marathon South Africa - 29th May 2011

Comrades Ultra Marathon South Africa - 29th May 2011

Founded in 1921 in commemoration of the soldiers who fought and died in the Great War, the Comrades Marathon bills itself as the ‘The Ultimate Human Race’ and is the world’s oldest and largest ultra marathon. Four Dumfries Running Club members made the very long journey to South Africa to take part in the 2011 version of the race, an ‘up’ run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg with almost 7000 feet of ascent and 5000 feet of descent over the 87 Km route...

Kircudbright Half Marathon

Kircudbright Half Marathon

A long established fixture on the local racing circuit, the Kirkcudbright Half marathon on Saturday 28th May, along with its increasingly popular younger sibling, the Beeches 11k, attracted 34 Dumfries Running Club members keen to test themselves on a deceptively difficult course. With both races starting at the Academy, the half marathon route is flat towards Borgue, then rises steadily to Twynholm with its difficult climb with the reward of a downhill route to Tongland Bridge and back to the Academy. The 11k covers some of this route but both are challenging, especially with a strong swirling headwind on some of the uphill sections.

2011 Monthly Handicap Race Results after 5th Race

The fifth of the 5K handicap races was held earlier in May using part of the Holywood Stroll route.

The maximum 50 points available was claimed by Rab Wilson and the fastest time on the night was a brisk 18:02 by Kevin Conchar. After 5 races Adam Dickie has extended his lead having done all 5 handicaps, but there are a number of runners with fewer runs completed that have a higher average per run. So hopefully over the coming months there will be a number of people challenging for the top spot. Remember that you need to complete 5 handicap races throughout the whole of 2011.

The updated results are available here.

The June 5K handicap race will be held on Thursday 9th June to avoid being too close to the Carlisle Tri 10K Club Championship race and Stranraer 1/2 marathon.

25th May - Races Coming Up!

Edinburgh Half Marathon

Sarah and Danny Queen ran the Edinburgh half marathon on Sunday 22nd May.

They reported a very blustery and squally day and you never knew whether the wind was with you or against you, although the last few miles it was definitely against! Sarah did a brilliant run to clock up a personal best in a time of 1hour 41m 26s for 658th out of a field of 4548, and 47th Lady from 2262 participants. This sets her up nicely for her planned triathlon in June. Danny continued his great form finishing 71st and 3rd male over 50 with a time of 84m and 3s which is a huge 2mins 25secs better than his previous best. Well done to Sarah and Danny!

Edinburgh Marathon - Lisa Finlay breaks 3 hours

With the Edinburgh marathon on Sunday 22nd May attracting a field of over 11,000 to be the second biggest marathon in the UK behind London, there were two Dumfries Running Club members taking part.

Cateran 55mile Trail Race

On Saturday 21st May two of the DRC ultra runners travelled to the Scottish Highlands to take part in the 55 mile Cateran trail race that is a counting race in the Scottish Ultra marathon trail race series.

With a beautiful route that covers much of rural Perthshire the race starts and finishes at the Spittal of Glenshee hotel with runners climbing nearly 3000metres of ascent as they go through Glenshee, Alyth and Blairgowrie around scenery made famous in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen. Paul Hart started well and was in the lead for the first four sections of the race but unfortunately was forced to pull out just over the halfway point as foot problems meant it was not wise for him to continue. Frank Skachill had another gutsy run showing sheer determination and character and battled through the rain and did not let an upset stomach deter him from reaching his goal to finish in 12 hours 9 minutes in his final long race before he tackles the big one, the 95 mile West Highland Way race next month.

Helensburgh 10K race

On Thursday 19th May Doug Brown, Jo Zakrzewski and Danny Queen represented DRC and ran the first 10k race of the Polaroid 10k series staged at Helensburgh.

Over 1100 entrants had very windy and squally conditions to deal with over a fairly stiff course. Jo was 1st in her category with a time of 36m 52s in 49th Place. Doug was 82nd with a chip time 38m 23s in 9th place in his category and Danny was 101st and in category 10th place with a PB of 38m 53s.

Holywood Stroll

Congratulations to all 87 runners who took part in another successful Holywood Stroll 5 mile road race on Tuesday 10th May.

Race winner Mickey Breen stopped the clock at 26:17 to record the fastest winning time in the last 5 years and Jo Zakrzewski broke the womens course record in 29:46. Full race report and photos to follow.

Full results are available here.

List of prize winners is available here.

Three Peaks Fell Race

Jo Zakrzewski took advantage of the good weather over the Bank Holiday weekend to test her recovering tendonitis out on the 3 Peaks Race in Yorkshire, before resuming Comrades training. This is a 23.5mile race starting and finishing in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, taking in Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, which involves ascending (and then obviously descending) a total of 4767 feet. Runners were hampered by gale force winds on the tops, but equally amused by the marshals wearing skydiving goggles. Jo steadily gained places on all the ascents, and took it easy on the first 2 descents watching others fly down past her, but managed to move up the field again from the last summit to finish in 4hours and 3 mins.
Troon 10K

Troon 10K

Unusually for the night of the Troon 10k on Wednesday 4th May, the conditions were perfect for running, and several club members made the trip up to the oversubscribed race.
