Haworth Hobble 32 mile fell race

15/03/2014

On Saturday 15th March, Les Hill, tackled his first ultra in nearly two years. He picked a tough race to make his comeback, at least 30 miles of the total is off road and there are nine hills that have more competitors walking the ascents than running up. The total climb is 4,400 feet, a similar height to Ben Nevis...

Les was delighted with his time of 5 hours 44 minutes 40 seconds and finished 107th from over 400 finishers.

He was 2nd V55 and less than one minute behind the first V55 but was unaware of this until he saw the results. This was because he had started cautiously due to his furthest run in the last six months being the 14 miles he had done at the Dentdale race the previous week and therefore had expected to struggle towards the end. In fact he kept the same pace, 10 minutes 45 seconds per mile, for the whole distance and lost count of how many places he gained in the second half, but estimated it to be around 50. He was able to run up every hill apart from the last 300 metres of Stoodley Pike near Hebden Bridge so on each climb he gained many places.

The “Hobble” is the first in the twelve race Runfurther Series of ultras. Participants have to do a minimum of four races which must include one from each of three categories and a fourth event to gain maximum points. The categories are based on distance and are classed as short, medium and long. The Hobble is only a 'short' race but with his renewed enthusiasm, Les is now planning to have a go at doing at least the minimum of four events over the year.
