DRC Cross Country Championship 2014: Gales and Glaur at Annan

23/02/2014

In the toughest of conditions DRC vests were to the fore in Annan and District Athletics Club’s excellent four mile cross country races. Spurred on by it being our DRC x-country championship event again this year our runners defied a ferocious south-westerly and gluepot glaur as they sought to overcome conditions as well as fellow competitors. Many fine, brave performances were ground out before any smile could be found!..

In the open Men’s event it was a runaway victory for young 17 year old Luke Foss from Law And District AC but coming in thereafter, DRC lads did really well taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots. Jim Buchanan played out a gritty tactical encounter with Alan Baxter for most of the race before easing ahead in the last 400 metres to take the DRC X-country crown on the day. Then, in a tight run in, Steven Smith found extra legs in the last 150 metres to edge past Alan, for our Club’s 2nd and 3rd Men’s X-country places. They were followed home in fairly close order by Richard Beck, Terry McCloskey, Graeme Cross, Sandy Shankland and Mo Khan.

In the ladies event Sian Finlay led from the start to win both the open Ladies event and the DRC crown. Sian traded places with Mo on the lads’ side on each lap, but in reality they gave each other great support as the testing conditions sucked at their stamina. Then in a real tussle Sue Jeffrey and Ali Groat were never more than 10-15 metres apart all the way but it was Sue who came in just ahead as 2nd DRC lady in our X-Country Championship with Ali 3rd lady. Then, our one competitor who did carry a smile on each lap, Fiona Jardine, crossed the line with arms aloft.

Thank you Annan and District AC for a fine event on a dirty day! All that a good cross-country event should be and tremendous to see the youngest of budding athletes take it on in their own age classes.

Peter.
