Inskip Half Marathon

19/01/2014

On Sunday January 19th, DRC members Jo Zakrzewski and Kevin Conchar took part in their first serious road race of the year. The Inskip Half Marathon's 500 places were sold out before the event as people looked to kick-start their year after some Christmas indulging...

The wind settled and the rain stopped before the start to leave almost perfect if slightly chilly conditions. The start caused rather a lot of confusion as the runners were led out into the main road and then along it, but most people did not realise that the clock started when the leading car passed the obvious 'Finish' sign. This led to people starting at different times and paces throughout the field, but the two DRC runners managed to work their way through some of the field and settle in to their own pace within the first mile.

The course is quite flat with only a few sharp turns, and is mainly on road, with a small section on rougher country lanes. The main obstacles (apart from a gentleman out with his dogs who caught Jo with his walking stick as she rounded a corner) were the deep puddles that stretched across the road in several places and couldn't be avoided.

Jo celebrated her birthday in style by finishing in 9th place overall in a new ladies course record of 78:36 whilst Kevin put in a great performance, racing his brother for the first time in many years to finish in 15th place in a time of 79:46, which bodes well for the season to come.

The goodie bags were excellent, containing hats to keep the runners warm and large chocolate bars to eat, though this was hardly necessary as runners were then given as much Lancashire hotpot as they could eat.
