Tinto Hill Race

09/11/2013

On Saturday 9th, a trio of DRC members braved the changeable weather conditions to take part in this year's Tinto hill race. Mohammed Khan was joined by clubmates Simon Mortlock and Ranjit Thomas, and he reports on their exploits as follows...

"Intermittent showers and the sight of snow covering the peak meant we were in for a fun afternoon. Organisers Carnethy enforced the wearing of full waterproofs, and were being extra vigilant at the start line to ensure all participants had the mandatory kit, turning away those who didn’t. As usual, we were also faced with listening to Ranjit’s deliberations on choice of footwear. On this occasion, Craig Malcolmson wasn’t on hand to knock some sense into him and stop him from turning up in his barefoots! Fortunately, we had a break in the weather just as the race begun.

It is an out and back route with steady climbing from the off, and boggy terrain initially. There were great views to be had up until around 600m above sea level, at which point we hit the snow line. At this stage, the mist had descended and the runners faced a tough steep slog to the summit cairn. The snow did make the initial part of the descent very fun though.

During the race, Simon was engaged in a personal duel with a Hardrock Hoodlum runner. He was very pleased to have come in ahead of his opponent, finishing in a terrific 43 minutes 58 seconds. Despite suffering frostbite in his toes, Ranjit still managed a solid run, coming in at 50 mins 13 secs. I finished just over 2 mins later, coming in at 52 mins 21 secs. I made amends for a slightly disappointing descent on Ben Nevis by managing to overtake 10-11 runners on the way down.

After a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in the hills, we headed back to Symington Sports Club, where we were greeted with much needed hot soup and tea".
