Newcastle Town Moor Marathon

27/10/2013

Six Dumfries Running Club (DRC) members took part in the Newcastle Town Moor Marathon on Sunday 27th October. A five lap course each of approximately 5.25 miles...

The six were Margaret Gray, Sandy Shankland, Les Hill, Mike Trant, Richard McDougal and Jim Grierson.

There was a blustery wind, but with the route taking many twists and turns it meant there was a fair share of being held back and propelled by the gusts. Overall the wind was more of a hindrance than a help and caused difficulties for some participants.

The race started in lovely autumn sunshine with Sandy setting the fastest pace on the first lap for the Doonhamers. He swapped positions several times in the first lap with a friend, and former DRC member, Ian Brown and by the start of the second lap he had opened a significant lead on Ian.

Due to the twisty nature of the course all the runners were able to see fellow club mates several times during the race and encourage each other as they passed.

Sandy ran strongly throughout the morning and finished in 3:09:56, 17th overall and second in the V55 category. He was one minute and thirty seconds ahead of Ian who is also in the V55 category.

Les was next to finish among the DRC members and despite it being his slowest ever marathon, 3:46:00, he was pleased as he had not been able to train for the event properly due to several injury problems.

Mike Trant finished in 4:11:34 completing his fourth and final marathon of the North East Marathon Club challenge over the year with Margaret Gray recording her best marathon time for a number of years in 4:25:57. Both Mike and Margaret had cold, heavy, rain to contend with during their last lap that added to their toil in tough running conditions.

Richard dropped out after four laps but having kept Margaret company for 21 miles he had played his part in helping her to an impressive time. Jim had been unwell for the last few weeks and only started because he knew the lapped course would enable him to pull out easily if he was struggling. He wisely called a halt to the proceedings part of the way through the second lap and will hopefully recover quickly to enable him to race again soon.
