Jo achieves Glasgow 2014 marathon standard!

27/10/2013

Having had a run of poor weather for her last few marathons, Jo Zakrzewski headed over to Germany to join 15,000 others running on the streets of Frankfurt with hopes of a change in her fortunes...

Having completed the 5k 'Pretzel run' on Saturday morning as a very gentle warm up, she was pleased to head to the start line on Sunday in dry but windy conditions. The first few miles of the course wound around the city with the tall buildings offering some protection from the elements, but as the runners headed out to the west, Jo found herself running alone into the wind. Luckily the heavens didn't open until she reached the 17k mark, but even after that, supporters were still to be found cheering the runners on from beneath their umbrellas.

Jo's training and fitness stood her in good stead for the second half of the race and she gradually picked runners off as they headed back towards the city centre. The final few kms wound around the buildings and cobbles of the centre again so there was plenty of support. In the final kilometre, she fought the headwind to overhaul the leading English lady (Emily Wicks), and entered the unique indoor finish in the Festival Hall as 15th lady, earning a big new PB of 2:39:15. Both she and 14th placed Hayley Haining (2:36:40) achieved the Scottish Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 2:40 for Glasgow 2014.
