Devil o' the Highlands race

03/08/2013

On Saturday 3rd August Paul Hart and Alistair Bloxham took part in the Devil O' the Highlands race...

The race covers 43 miles along the West Highland Way from Tyndrum to Fort William and in 2009 Paul finished the event in 2nd place in 5 hours 40 minutes, however when he returned in 2011 he was unable to finish due to a painful knee which eventually led to knee surgery in 2012.

After more than a year of recovery, Paul entered the race this year with the main objective of getting to the finish with no knee pain but also hoping he could be competitive. On the start line at 6 a.m. the weather was very poor with heavy rain showers and gales which persisted throughout the race. At the 1st checkpoint at Bridge of Orchy Paul was in 3rd place. During the climb up the Devils staircase Paul took the race lead and maintained this until a bad fall with 8 miles to go lost him some time whilst he recovered. Ironically whilst the fall injured his face, hands and chest at least his knees were OK! Paul was delighted to finish in 2nd place in 6 hours 5 mins and most importantly with no knee pain to report.

Alistair reached the Fort William finish in 8 hours 13 minutes in 51st place.
