The Virgin London Triathlon

28/07/2013

Sarah Queen completed her first Olympic distance Triathlon on Sunday 28th July in the Virgin London Triathlon...

It was a massive event held in the impressive Excel Stadium in London Docklands over Saturday and Sunday with almost every nationality represented.

Sarah’s “wave” was at 08:30 on Sunday morning where 422 females were competing in the 1500m swim, 40k bike ride and 10k run. A swimming wave went off every half hour but the women’s Olympic distance tri saw the largest competitor participation of the weekend, almost double the numbers of every other entry.

Sarah had a very comfortable swim once she had negotiated herself away from the masses at the start, and was one of the first few out the water in 27:59. Unfortunately the changeover didn’t go so well as she could not locate her bike, leading to a 6 minute transition. Once on the bike though her two circuits from Docklands to Westminster went well and she took 1 hour 15 minutes and 21 secs to complete the 40k. Onto the run and Sarah really picked up many places here with a superb 42:18 for the 10k.

All in all a tremendous first triathlon for Sarah with a final time of 2 hours 33 minutes putting her well in the first 10% of her wave. She was of the opinion that this triathlon must be one of the best organised events of its type. It was a busy weekend for the area as at the same time only a few hundred metres away, the Olympic Stadium in Stratford was hosting it’s first birthday celebrations since the fantastic Olympic Games.
