St Mary's Loch - Short Fast 'Durty' Triathlon

27/07/2013

A few years ago, Alan Baxter accepted a challenge from a friend which would result in him standing on the banks of St Mary's Loch on Saturday 27th, with more than a little feeling of apprehension. Alan explains...

"I took on a challenge with a friend a few years ago that we would do a triathlon for his 40th. The time flew past and here we were. With limited swimming ability, only 3 practice swims and only one go on a mountain bike in a decade...what could go wrong?

The event was made up with a 750m open water swim followed by a 15km off-road mountain bike ride, and to cap it off, a 5km off-road run.

Coming out of the water near the back and taking far too long to get ready for the bike, I then set off up the very long hill and managed to over-take a lot of people. Frustratingly the course goes from farm track to single track and overtaking isn't an option, in fact a good bit of it becomes a walk up a muddy hill with a bike to push. Imagine Moffat x 2 after a torrential down pour.. this is a very hilly route!! The downhill can only be described as crazy and to be honest I had to chicken out and walk a few bits. Back on the level and I was flying towards another very slow transition.

On to the run, now I knew I was ok. To say it was hilly is an understatement, but this suited me down to the ground and again I was passing several people.

I was pleased to finish in a time of 1.27.41 and 16th from a hundred and twenty odd and was 2nd fastest runner on the day. Earlier in the day my son Daniel finished 3rd in his age group in the junior Aquathlon and he was delighted.

I reckon I will be back for another go next year and might just have got the triathlon bug!

This was a great event, very friendly and well organised!"

Alan.
