Cross Border 10K Challenge

21/07/2013

Nine Dumfries Running Club members joined an approximate field of 450 who took part in the 2nd Cross Border 10k from Gretna to Carlisle...

The route took the runners from the Scottish side of the Border along the road that runs parallel to the M6 Motorway to the finish in England at the northern reaches of Carlisle.

The course was undulating with a couple of short steep hills that zapped the energy out of tired runners. With little shelter from the hot sunshine, the participants had to try hard to find what little shade and breeze there was available to stay comfortable.

The hot weather and a strong head wind provided a great challenge to all runners but the Dumfries contingent agreed that the race was well organised with nice touches such as extra water stations and 'sprinklers' to keep the runners hydrated and cool. Back in Dumfries, over post race refreshments, all said that they would like to run the race again next year.

The race winner was Alastair Weymouth of Border Harriers in a time of 34:37 and the first female finisher was Heidi Dent in a time of 41:47.

DRC results as follows:

Kevin Conchar 38:42

Ranjit Thomas 40:37

Mark Johnston 45:54

Sue Jeffrey 48:12

Alison Groat 49:44

Jo Needham 55:49

Fiona Jardine 57:07

Lesley Wells 59:01

Jo Pennington 1:01:21

Jo Pennington's younger brother, Chris Kerr ran his first ever race and completed it in an encouraging 57:45.
