Self Transcendance 5K Road Race

01/05/2013

The Self Transcendence 5K road race held at Silverknowes on Wednesday evening doubled up as the Scottish National 5K championships and the second race in the Scottish road running Grand Prix. Two runners from Dumfries Running Club made their way up to join in this popular midweek race...

The course consists of a flat figure of 8 along the shore, similar to that of the Edinburgh parkrun. It is an area which always seems to be exposed to strong winds, but apart from that it is a fast course. There was a 10% increase in the field this year compared to last year, which caused some problems with congestion and pinch-points in the first kilometre. Remarkably, for the 3rd year in a row the winning time for the race was 14:35, with this year's winner being Andrew Butchart, while Elspeth Curran headed up a very strong ladies' field, breaking the course record in 16:27.

Jim Buchanan was keen to test out his race fitness after a solid spell of hard training and started off very strongly, keeping ahead of the accidents that happened due to the sheer number of runners. He paced it well and pushed on throughout the race to finish in a time of 17:08, taking 36 seconds off his best time over that distance, which bodes well for the summer season.

Jo Zakrzewski also started off relatively quickly, though was almost caught out by tumbling runners and found the speed of the race over the short distance a rather tough challenge. However her finishing time of 17:44 was good enough to shave a few seconds off the club's 5K record.
