Crawley 12 hour track race

27/04/2013

On Friday April 26th, Vicky Hart travelled to the south of England to take part in the Crawley A.I.M. 12 Hour Track Race... she reports as follows...

"As a Bronze Label IAU event the race has waiting lists of entrants every year. With it being such a prestigious race Vicky had targeted it as her main race for 2013 and focused all her training towards it.

The race began at 7am on Saturday 27th in sunny but frosty conditions.  Vicky used her experience of timed races to stick to a specific pre-planned race pace and strategy. As many of the other runners set off at a very fast pace Vicky stuck to her plan and focused on maintaining a steady and even time for each lap of the 400 meter track.

After a couple of hours Vicky started to suffer with cramp and stomach issues. She slowed her pace slightly and was able to manage the issues until they finally dissipated.

At 6 hours into the race Vicky became aware that she was closing in on the leading lady and finally took the lead at 7 hours.  It was very close for the next couple of hours before Vicky’s lead became certain. Not content with just coming home with the 1st lady position Vicky shifted her focus to the overall race.  She moved up into 3rd position overall with 2 hours to go but only had a lead of half a mile over 4th position (3rd male). Encouraged by her support crew and other runners on the track, Vicky ran hard through the pain of the final 2 hours and clinched the coveted final podium position for the overall race.

As the horn sounded the end of the race Vicky dropped her marker at the track side to show her final distance of 65.45 miles and was greeted by a hug from Susan Gallagher who had been supporting her through the race.

In a fantastic result Vicky won the ladies race and finished 3rd in the overall race. Afterwards Vicky said she was still in shock as she never expected to win but she over the moon to have finally had achieved the result she has trained so hard for."
