Lotus Hill Race

28/04/2013

Runners making their way out to Lotus Hill for the club hill race championship were met with cool winds and drizzle, and a briefing that described both bogs underfoot and tussocky grass, making some wonder if they were taking their lives into their own hands. There was still a good turnout of 22 DRC runners and 4 guests, with many other club members helping with organisation, timing, photography and marshalling...

David Parrish (the race organiser) changed out of his wellies and set off from the start as if he meant business.....and no other runner came close to him until the finish. Many of the others ran in small groups on the fire road at the start of the race, but the field spread out as they turned off into the grass and bog. The route climbed out of the forest into open moorland and onto the summit of the hill (at 321m) where many runners managed a smile for the photographer. The descent was very wet and boggy, and it was here that positions were lost and won, as Adam Dickie used his descending skill to forge an advantage over Alan Baxter, knowing he needed to open up a gap before the final section of fire road at the end.

Congratulations go the the new DRC hill champions of David Parrish and Jo Zakrzewski, runners up Adam Dickie and Sue Jeffrey, with Alan Baxter and Sandie Donald rounding off the podium.
