Virgin London Marathon

21/04/2013

There were three Dumfries Running Club members who joined 35,000 finishers for the London marathon live on the BBC last Sunday morning...

Richard McDougal was the only one of the trio who had completed the distance before and he was able to use his experience to help the others calm any pre-race nerves or anxieties. As expected he was the fastest of the three, with steady even paced running meaning he completed the course in 4 hours 10 minutes.

Debutantes Caroline Frieslick and Kim Adamson have been working very hard over the winter months to get ready for such a daunting event by gradually adding extra distance on to their Sunday training routes around Dumfries. Caroline reached halfway in a conservative 2 hours 6 minutes with Kim 15 minutes behind her with both aware that the uncharted territory of the final quarter of the race would require every ounce of effort. In an excellent finish Caroline managed to speed up in the last 2 miles and crossed the line in 5 hours 6 minutes and Kim gritted her teeth to finish in 5 hours 22.

Afterwards Caroline spoke of her marathon experience as follows:

"I just wanted to say what a wonderful experience it was to run London, what a great weekend we all had (and the fab weather, company, and atmosphere from the crowds along the route all contributed to that!), and thank you so much to the club for putting their faith in me! I had many doubts during our training sessions that I would complete it, but it's amazing what a bit of determination and lots of support by fellow runners and family members can do. I would recommend the whole London event to anyone with a desire to run a marathon. Might I just add, it may have been my debut marathon, but I will definitely not be repeating the experience!! I will be sticking to much shorter distances from now on! Kim, despite her time away from training due to injuries, ran a fantastic time on the day, and Richard managed a great run which he should be very proud of. I couldn't have asked for nicer people to take part with."

Many thanks go to womens club captain Margaret Gray and her husband Andrew who supported and encouraged at several points on the course and who mentored and supported the two newcomers to running through such a massive personal challenge.
