Kaim Hill Race

17/04/2013

David Parrish and Richard Beck took a midweek trip to North Ayrshire to participate in the Kaim Hill race, a report in David's unique style follows...

"The weather was most unforgiving; swirling gales and swarming rain stung faces and skewed trees. Richard Beck, seeking to scrutinise his early potential, was rhapsodically defiant to the tempest. Kaim Hill Race, Fairlie, would be his debut on the fells. Himself and David Parrish made the journey together and contrived to almost miss the race, owing to discrepant directions and poor punctuality.

The weather did not yield to the willing athletes. Cloud cover was absolute, however, and thus spared them from any harrowing conjectures of height and gradient. The race began on tarmac, easing into winding trail, developing onto muddy fields and bursting into rough heather and tussock in a final slog to the summit, and then it was back the same way.

Richard felt the ups and downs of fell running, the spectrum of emotions; from droll melancholy as wind and water withered his wearing muscles, to bright and buoyant gaiety as he bounded down off the hill, taking places from experienced hill runners.

On the whole the race was superb, well marked and marshalled (considering also the change of route) and the prize giving was fantastic, with both David and Richard receiving t-shirts and hoodies. Iain MacCorquodale led from the start to win in 30.36."
