Jo smashes Lochaber Marathon course record.

14/04/2013

On the drive up to Fort William, Jo Zakrzewski of Dumfries Running Club questioned herself on the sanity of running another wet weather marathon only 4 weeks after her race in Barcelona in less than ideal conditions...

However, the 30th running of the Lochaber marathon was actually blessed with true Scottish weather.. ie, the runners were treated to a full gamut of rainy, windy, and sunny spells!

The course is an out and back route along the side of Loch Eil, and it both starts and finishes on the Fort William shinty pitch (which was rather boggy due to the heavy rain).

Runners are rewarded with stunning views of snow covered peaks, and although the roads are still open to traffic, it is quiet enough that competitors can encourage each other from opposite sides of the road as they double back at the turnaround point.

Jo built on her Barcelona experiences to have a steady run out, and overhauled several men in the last few miles to finish in a fantastic 2nd place overall in 2:45:55, shattering the Ladies' course record (which had stood for 15 years), by almost 5 minutes. In an unusual turn of events, the ladies showed their strength on the day, with the 2nd lady finishing 4th overall out of the 363 finishers.

Jo's time for the race, alongside her result in Barcelona, means that she presently has 2 of the 3 fastest marathon times in the UK for 2013.
