Jo wins West District 10 mile Championship title

07/04/2013

On Sunday April 7th, three Dumfries Running Club members travelled up to Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell for the annual Tom Scott 10 mile road race...

The 2013 event (the 51st running of the race) incorporated the Scottish 10 mile championships, the West District championships and the Scottish Veteran Harriers championships.

It was a cold day but, unusually for Strathclyde Park, there was no wind, so this provided ideal conditions for the capacity field to run fast times, suitably demonstrated by Fiona Matheson who won the ladies' race in a new LV50 UK age group record of 58:08.

Jo Zakrzewski had been faced with a tough choice as to which of the weekend 10 mile races to run, but in the end opted to test herself in the Championship field at Motherwell. The decision proved to be the right one for Jo as she reaped the benefits of her recent hard marathon training to run a strong race and take almost a minute off her PB, finishing 17th overall, 2nd lady and winning the West District championship, in a new club record of 58:20.

Mike Trant and Jim Grierson showed their affinity for this race by running it off the back of the previous day's Longtown 10 and finished in 83:09 and 84:38 respectively.
