Sue samples the delights of the Cartmel Sticky Toffee 10k

16/03/2013

Sat 16th March saw the opening event of the Lakeland Trails Spring Series take place in the village of Cartmel, and Sue Jeffrey represented DRC in the first race of the day, the very muddy Sticky Toffee 10k...

After a morning of constant drizzle and low cloud, Sue joined the field of 265 runners on the start line on the very boggy Cartmel Racecourse. From here the route followed a gradual incline on relatively ‘dry’ sections of good bridleways and short road sections.

Eventually the weather eased off slightly and the beautiful South Lakeland scenery could be enjoyed. However as the race progressed the underfoot conditions became more uneven and the mud got higher and higher up the legs. Some brave running on a section of long (and slippery) descents allowed Sue to make up some time before the last sneaky steep section through Park Woods.

The final section consisted of a short decent through the woods before rejoining the racecourse and a ‘sticky’ gallop through the mud to the finish line.

The first finisher crossed the line in 43:28 and Sue was very pleased with her time of 62:07 claiming to have enjoyed every minute of the race, mud and all, a claim which later prompted her to say, "It was the most fun I’ve had whilst running, the muddier the better!"
