Glenkiln 12

03/03/2013

Last Sunday the 3rd March, a brand new event was held at Shawhead where 21 Dumfries Running Club members joined the field for Dumfries Harriers' Glenkiln 12 mile race...

This friendly low key event was perfect for anyone with an upcoming marathon in mind and many of the field of 40 treated the whole event as a training session rather than a race, with several competitors accompanied by their dogs on a leash. The warm Spring-like sunshine showcased the stunning scenery around Glenkiln and Shawhead at it's best for the runners, even if the route had more than enough uphill sections to catch out the unwary.

The race was won in 79:43 by Kevin McCaig of Dumfries Harriers who had enough strength to hold off Adam Dickie by 46 seconds. Ranjit Thomas ran strongly in 85:48 and Craig Malcolmson in 89:53 warmed up for the Barcelona marathon later this month by drawing clear of both Jeff Donnelly and Stephen Mohan in the last three miles. Peter McGill in 93:59 finished nineteen seconds ahead of David Burns and in his second race of the weekend, Mark Johnston ran strongly in 98:38 with Alison Groat accompanied by Ruby winning the DRC battle of the canines in 100:13.

Martha Halbert completed the course in 108:47 with Theresa Lavery and Dawn McDonald, along with Ben and Socks, less than two minutes behind.

In his first race for months Bob Quin did well in 111:20, finishing two minutes in front of Gemma Leadbetter with Margaret Gray and Susan Callander, accompanied by Dulcie, a further minute behind.

Using the event as training for the London Marathon, Caroline Frieslick finished alongside Fiona Jardine in 116:48 with Frank Skachill comfortably running the course with Donald Anson and Gerry Edgar in around 2 hours 20 minutes.
