Stockton Winter 5K Trail race

13/01/2013

On Sunday 13th January, whilst visiting family in her home town of Stockton-on-Tees, Gemma Leadbetter took the opportunity to take part in her first running event for 6 months...

Whilst keen not to let a weekend away tamper with her New Year’s resolution, Gemma made her way to Wynyard Woodland Park which played host to event number 4 in the Stockton Winter 5K Trail Series. The race started and finished immediately outside the coffee shop and visitor centre which was once Thorpe Thewles train station.

The course began with a flat trail section along the route of the old railway line, before negotiating some undulating paths around the nature reserve and pond situated in the stunning countryside. However Gemma states that this pleasure abruptly turned to pain as the last kilometre or so involved an almost vertical climb up a stair pathway which brought even the most seasoned runners to a walk. She was pleased to give her new DRC T-shirt it's first outing and finished in a time of 28:36, which although she felt was far from her best performance, did give her a respectable start to the year.

Gemma thoroughly enjoyed the race and says she would definitely do it again, despite the climb!
