Devil takes the hindmost

03/01/2013

On Thursday 3rd, the David Keswick Centre played host to DRC's version of a 'Devil takes the hindmost' with over 40 club members turning up to compete or to lend support to those trying to evade the clutches of the 'devil'...

This year, the format was for a group warm-up followed by everyone slotting in behind the event pacers Audrey and Jo for a further mile. After this the 'Devil' started to "take the hindmost", with the last person across the finish line each lap dropping out. (such was the popularity this year, that in the early stages of the race the devil was able to grab two victims on each circuit). The only real rule was that runners had to stay behind the pacers until a designated point whereupon they could overtake and make their dash for the safety of the finish line.

As the race progressed the numbers dwindled and the pace increased, with the sprints becoming ever more competitive, until in the end only David Parrish and Alan Baxter remained to fight out the final lap. Once free of the pacer, David launched himself into an unbeatable sprint to retain his 'Devil takes the hindmost' title.

The fun evening was rounded off by 5 teams of 4 contesting a 'medley relay' consisting of legs of 400m followed by 2 x 200m then a final 400m.
