Florence Marathon

25/11/2012

Lisa Finlay travelled to Italy to take part in the Florence Marathon and was rewarded for her training efforts with a fantastic new personal best!.. Lisa gives her account as follows...

"After a punishing experience in the Loch Ness marathon 2 months ago, I decided to 'get back on the horse again' quickly and have a go at another marathon. The fact that it meant a long weekend in beautiful Florence might have strengthened my spirit!!

The day of the race was cold and calm at first. In fact, I was so chilly it took me about 5 miles to feel in rhythm, not helped by a slightly congested, narrow start to the course. I was managing to hit my target pace on my watch, and gradually started to feel good. Again, I had the invaluable support of my husband, Dave, bringing me supplies of lucozade sport at prearranged meeting points on the course, essential as it had become quite humid.

I went through the halfway point in 1:27:45, and was even able to speed up slightly in the second half. It was such a different experience from the struggle at Loch Ness! The Italian crowds gave wonderful support, with cries of 'Bella!, Bellissimo!' following me all the way round. I was concentrating so hard I did not even notice running over the Ponte Vecchio or past the Duomo, but I managed to enjoy the atmosphere and the quaint, narrow streets. I finished as tenth woman and first vet 40, and was very proud of my new PB of 2:54:39.

Of course, the best bit was the recovery in the warm Florence evening, and Lucozade sport was happily replaced with a glass or two of Italian wine!!"
