Round Rotherham Relay

20/10/2012

Last Saturday saw two Dumfries Running Club teams travel to Yorkshire to take part in one of the friendliest events on the running calendar, the Round Rotherham Relay...

This 50 mile event sees walkers and runners navigate their way along canal banks, through the South Yorkshire forest, across ploughed fields, on trail and road with only a minimal number of checkpoints. Dumfries runners have supported this event for over a decade now and are as such welcomed as old friends. This year the two relay teams who entered did so with slightly different aspirations to each other.

The 'Dumfries Devils' team consisting of Sandy Shankland, Les Hill, Mhairi Duff and Alastair Bloxham were hoping to get round as fast as possible, whilst the quartet of Stephen Mohan, Richard McDougal, Frank Skachill and Dawn McDonald, collectivly named as 'At Least We’re Trying', had a less competitive agenda, but nevertheless were determined to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather on offer and do the best they could.

With each DRC runner doing two legs there was no way they could compete with some very strong local clubs who put their fastest runners out for each of the 8 legs in a battle for local bragging rights. The outright team winner, Clowne Road Runners, completed the course in under 5 hours 15 minutes.

With Sandy Shankland setting a fast pace of 79 mins for the first (and longest) stage, he handed over in 4th place to event debutant Alastair Bloxham who successfully navigated his way around the second leg. Sandy took over again for the next section and maintained his good form to give Mhairi Duff a chance to run at her usual good standard on leg 4. Jacob Tangey accompanied the team for the second half of the event as a recce for an individual attempt on the full distance next year and helped the quartet get round in 6 hours 45 minutes in a very creditable 9th place.

The 'At Least We’re Trying' team were all familiar with the route and Richard started out for them before handing over to Frank for leg 2. Frank survived a nasty fall on this section and gave Dawn a good platform from which to negotiate the tricky 3rd leg. Stephen took over for leg 4 before Frank maintained his good standard for leg 5. With Richard running well on the photogenic leg 6 past the ruins of Roche Abbey, Dawn then ran strongly on the penultimate stage to hand over once more to Stephen, who brought the team home in a time of 7 hours and 40 minutes.

With few navigation problems, good weather and the experience of such a friendly welcoming and fun event, it is hoped that the club will continue to support this event well into the future.
