Dalbeattie Hardrock Challenge

07/10/2012

On Sunday 7th October, 16 Dumfries Running Club members took part in an event that has now become an established favourite on the local athletics scene...

Consisting of a 10 mile forest run followed by a challenging 16 mile mountain bike section on the 7 Stanes route, it is possible to enter the event as teams or as individuals. Naturally most DRC members took part as running team members, but three of them, including two first timers, decided to tackle the challenge solo.

Last year’s winning team, DRC’s David Parrish and (Next Level Bikes) cyclist Ross Green retained their Hardrock title, finishing with a combined time of 2:13:28. David recorded the second fastest run of the day in 61:30. In an event that suits those who are familiar with the terrain, local runners Alastair Stapleton and Norman Neilson ran very well in around 66 mins with Lisa Finlay fastest woman on the run section in 68:09.

Ranjit Thomas was surefooted on trickier sections of the route to complete the course in 69:27. Ranjit finished only 5 seconds ahead of Sebastian Pflanz who, with clubmate Craig Malcolmson performing the cycling duties, made up the winning V40 team to return an overall time for the event of 2:29:56. Nick Stapleton, another runner on home turf, crossed the line in 73:16 with Alastair Bloxham in 76.03 heading off Stephen Mohan in 76:44. Nick then swapped his running shoes for cycling shoes and mounted his bike to complete the race as a solo competitor, finishing in 2:51:52.

Maureen Dickson ran well in 80:50 and handed over to David Burns for the unfamiliar role of team cyclist, with the pair recording an overall time of 3:23:28. Dawn McDonald enjoyed her run in 89:46 as did Sandie Donald in 92:04, Sandie competing as part of the aptly named “Glitter and Mud” team.

Two of the day’s best performances however, came from Alison Crooks and Michelle McCrindle. Neither had the chance to practice much on such unforgiving technical terrain yet decided to tackle the whole event for the first time, completing their runs in 93 and 95 minutes respectively. Despite a couple of minor falls and mechanical difficulties both completed the course, Alison in 3:44:56 and Michelle in 4:03:16, which was good enough to secure age group prizes.
