Great Cumbrian Run

07/10/2012

On Sunday 7th October, Kevin Conchar took another step forward on his recovery from injury with a last minute decision to do the Great Cumbrian Run. Kevin reports on the race...

"The race begins at Carlisle castle then goes through the city centre before heading out into the countryside. On a chilly but perfect running morning the race was started by Eilish McColghan and we were off.

My plan was to go at a steady pace with no fireworks and get round in one piece. Although getting better, I feel I'm still nowhere near 100% fit yet and have to be very carefull about putting too much into a race. The course itself is pretty hilly and several people were paying for fast starts, but for a change I wasn't one of them. Pretty even splits around 6.15's for the first few miles gave me a bit of breathing space when the hills arrived. Without too much trouble I managed to get past the worst of them and with a few miles of flat towards the end I managed to pick up my early pace again.

Unfortunately on the running track finish at the end I came round the final bend about to overtake two runners in front of me, biding my time for the straight, only to find the race finished on the bend (very strange!!). So potentially 2 places lost at the end, but reasonably happy with 83:25 and 23rd place from what the organiser said were around 1500 entries. After the race Eilish McColgan came over for a chat and signed stuff for my kids so they were very happy with that. The race itself is very well organised, but I might leave it a while before attempting another crack at it!!."

Kevin.
