PB for Lisa at the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon

30/09/2012

Lisa Finlay travelled north to Inverness to compete in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and to try to defend her Scottish Marathon title. Lisa's account of her race experience is as follows...

"I started off feeling good, running comfortably for the first half. I knew I would have a battle if I wanted to retain my title and this was confirmed by Avril Mason (Shettleston Harriers) and Jill Knowles (Scottish Prison Service AC) running alongside me. However, I was determined to run my own race and not be distracted by what anyone else was doing. By halfway, I had a slight lead on Jill, but Avril was still close by. We went through the first half in just under 1:24 - fast, but there is a generally downhill gradient in the first 10 miles, so I hoped I would get away with it. I started to feel a bit of fatigue at 18 miles and Avril went past me. The rough patch eased a little from mile 20 to 22 and I tried hard to catch her. However, by the last 4 miles I was really hurting, and it was a battle to get through the last bit of the race. I finished 2nd, (first over 40), in a new PB of 2:57:55, but it was an extremely tough race for me. Afterwards, I could only congratulate Avril and sit down at the finish line. When I finally tried to get up several minutes later, I had to ask for the help of one of the marshalls!! So, overall, I was a little disappointed in the result, but I did the best I could during the race and did get a new PB for my efforts. I will just have to come back and do better next year!!"

Lisa.
