The Ben Nevis Hill Race

01/09/2012

For the British hill running community, the only place to be on Saturday September 1st was Fort William’s Claggan Park, start venue for the annual challenge to race up and down the 4406 feet of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis...

Three DRC runners Craig Malcolmson, Ranjit Thomas and Sebastian Pflanz managed to gain entry to the race and made the long trip north. With the pre race weather forecast suggesting heavy rain and 80mph gusts of wind on top, the trio were feeling apprehensive about the task facing them. However as the runners were marched round the Claggan shinty pitch by the local pipe band to the start line, the forecasters appeared thankfully to have got it wrong as visibility was good for the first 2500 feet before heavy mud caused problems along with a bitter wind, but thankfully not as bad as the promised 80mph gusts.

The first DRC runner home was Craig who was pleased with his time of 2:13:00 in 148th place, ahead of first time ‘Ben’ runner and training partner Sebastian who was delighted with his time of 2:22:52 in 229th place. Ranjit, who despite not having done much training, was pleased to take nearly 4 mins from his 2011 time to come home in 2:32:14 in 279th place.
