Great Scottish Run Half Marathon

02/09/2012

On Sunday September 2nd, Jo Zakrzewski and Lisa Finlay made the trip up to Glasgow to join a field of 9,000 others taking part in the Great Scottish Run Half marathon...

With both women aiming for marathons in a few weeks time the race was seen as a great opportunity to test themselves over a shorter distance and to gauge on how well their training has been going.

Jo set off rather fast, being a little concerned to find herself behind the predesignated 80 minute pacemaker, only to find out a few miles in that unbeknown to all but himself he'd decided to run a 75-76 min race. Although she perhaps suffered for this in the latter stages she ran a good solid race and was pleased to finish as 3rd British lady and 46th overall in 78:44.

Lisa had an outstanding well paced-run to take 1 min 40 sec off her personal best for the distance and finish in 60th position overall (4th British lady) in 80:14. As an unexpected bonus to both DRC ladies, they discovered that the race incorporated the Scottish Half Marathon Championships and so Jo received the open bronze medal, while she and Lisa podiumed along with Dumfries-born Hayley Haining in the veteran championships.

These results should give both girls some confidence for their forthcoming marathons.

In a very high quality field it was Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Joseph Birech of Kenya who defended his GSR title in a time of 63:15 with Ethiopean Bezunash Bekele , who placed 4th in last year's World Championship marathon winning the womens' race in 69:10.
