ADAC Festival of Running

10/08/2012

The Annan Festival of Running took place over the weekend 10 -12 August and consisted of 4 very different races run in less than 48 hours. The results are age-sex graded and so competitors don't know their overall placing until after the event…

The series started with a mile track race on the Friday night followed, after a 45 minute break, by a 3.75 mile Cross Country race (both at Annan). Saturday morning brought a 6 mile handicapped road race at Gretna and the festival culminated on Sunday morning with a 3.5 mile hill race at Moffat.

David Breen, Susan Gallagher and Audrey Brown toughed it out over the whole series, with David finishing in 10th place overall, Susan in 14th place overall and Audrey in 17th overall out of the 40 people who competed in at least one of the weekend’s races.

They were joined on Friday night by several other club mates, with Alan Baxter crossing the mile finish line first in 5.09, while Kevin Breen was just outsprinted for 2nd place, though Doug Brown scored highest in the graded results. Vicky Hart was the first lady to finish the mile in 6.37, with Audrey scoring highest in the graded results. Jo Zakrzewski helped with the timing and cheered the others on.

On slightly tired legs, David, Kevin, Susan and Audrey continued on with the Cross Country which followed an out and back route along the River Annan. This time Kevin was first of the DRC contingent to arrive back at the track, followed by Susan, Dave and then Audrey.

Saturday morning dawned rather warm and some competitors coped better than others in the heat. The Gretna road course seemed a bit more undulating than expected but the handicapped start meant that everyone was able to encourage each other as they passed on route to the finish and back to the Blacksmith’s Shop car park for well earned snacks.

On the final event, the run at Hind Hill in Moffat, Susan unfortunately briefly lost the route which cost her some time but was still able to finish first from DRC, while Dave bravely picked himself up from a small tumble to complete his least favorite discipline and Audrey was pleased to finish in a faster time than her last year’s attempt.

Overall winner of the event was once again ADAC's very own evergreen Jim Buchanan. All 3 DRC runners would like to thank ADAC for their organisation of the event and superb hospitality over the weekend and would urge others to give it a try next time..
