The Lakeland 50

28/07/2012

Susan Graham travelled down to the Lake District at the weekend to take part in the Lakeland 50, the second year in a row that she has participated in the event...

Starting from the Northern end of Ullswater within the Dalemain Estate, the event covers 50 miles of rough terrain with approximately 3100m of ascent. On the way participants pass Mardale Head, Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tiberthwaite before a final climb and leg jarring descent to the finish at Coniston, visiting 6 manned checkpoints on route.

The Lakeland 50 starts at midday on Saturday, however Susan travelled down on Friday and was very pleased to see the participants in the 100 mile event setting off, describing it as 'Amazing'.

Susan reports that next day, after being bused to Dalemain Estate for the 12:00 start, she stuck doggedly to her planned strategy of run a bit, walk a lot.. then run a bit more!.. And that despite some atrocious weather conditions when, for example, the rain came on as she was just leaving the Mardale Head checkpoint and by the time she had reached the top of Gatesgarth the wind was getting up good style, she was extremely pleased (actually over the moon!) to knock over 1 hour and 20 mins off her previous time for the event.

Susan commented that she was thrilled with the encouragement and support received from her DRC clubmates.
