The EMF Edinburgh Marathon

27/05/2012

Congratulations to Shiona Armstrong, Vicky Hart, James Grierson, Alistair Bloxham, Sebastian Pflanz and Danny Queen of DRC who ran the EMF Edinburgh Marathon last Sunday. The marathon is the premier event in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival which saw a record-breaking 23,000 take part in the various events over the Festival weekend…

With temperatures reaching 19C, organisers provided 131,085 bottles of water along the 26.2 mile route and another 29,000 at the finish. The fantastic Edinburgh crowds lining the streets gave enthusiastic support with locals linking up cold water hoses from their homes, distributing plenty of jelly babies and going wild with vocal encouragement. The on-course support and encouragement offered by Club members Margaret Gray and her husband Andrew and Paul Hart with baby Annabel was also well appreciated by the Dumfries runners.

First time marathoner Shiona gave herself a baptism of fire running in the heat of the day to finish in 7711th place in 5 hours 54 minutes and 25 seconds. Sensibly with this being her debut Shiona set an even pace and coped tremendously well with the conditions.

Training for next month’s West Highland way race Sebastian Pflanz gave a textbook exercise in steady paced running in 3:59:12. After starting very well, Jim Grierson hit a tough spot around mile 16 before summing up all his considerable experience to record a time of 4:15:20 for 3685th place.

Vicky Hart maintained her excellent comeback form since the birth of baby Annabel last year with a sub four hour PB. Again Vicky ran a steady pace early on and this paid dividends for her with her new PB of 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds, to give her 2416th place in the race.

Alistair Bloxham who is about to become an Olympic Torch bearer when it passes through Dumfries, was attempting a road marathon for the first time, although he is used to competing in ultra running events. Due to traffic congestion on his way to the event, Alistair only just made the starting line before the gun went off. Despite this he ran a well paced race to finish in 1183rd place in a time of 3:35:30

Fastest on the day for Dumfries Running Club was Danny Queen. In his second Edinburgh Marathon on this course, Danny put his experience to good use. Despite the log jam of starters meaning a slow first mile, Danny's previous knowledge of the route meant that he was confident of pulling time back due to the gentle downhill slope of the first 6 miles and although tiring in the last few miles, he maintained a good pace to finish in 326th place in a new personal best time of 3:11:53. Luckily for Danny, his son Ross, who had earlier posted a time of 100 minutes and 43 seconds in the half marathon, was there to help him celebrate such an excellent performance.
