Weegie Wifeys' 10K

13/05/2012

Dark overcast skies greeted the thousands of runners who gathered on the south side of Glasgow on Sunday morning for the 2012 Ignis Asset Management Women's 10K, amongst them were 16 Dumfries Running Club ladies...

Over 10,000 women had entered the event, which is the biggest only women's event in the UK and they were all hoping that the threatening rain would hold off until after the finish. Despite the strong winds, Glaswegians turned out in large numbers to line the route, and runners were also encouraged by regular musical interludes along the way.

In the event, those runners who finished in under 50/55 minutes did manage to avoid the worst of the rain but the majority of the field had to complete the course in worsening conditions. Of the 16 members of Dumfries Running Club, there were several who were attempting their first ever 10K race, and all were rewarded with great times and a fun day out on the club bus. The race seemed designed for the Dumfries ladies, as runners started out on Maxwell Road, then ran along Nithsdale Road and Terregles Road before entering Herries Road, and then they finally had to dodge deer crossing the route in the Park, as they might while running alongside the Nith back at home.

First home was Jo Zakrzewski, who only missed out on a podium place in the final sprint, in 36.02. Lisa Finlay was the first V40 back in 12th place overall, finishing in 37.50. Mhairi Duff, returning from injury, was pleased to have maintained her fitness and also finished in the top 20 (38.57). The first 4 ladies home from a club counted towards the team prize, so the vital 4th place went to Sian Finlay, finishing 73rd in 43.17.

Next home was Sarah Queen in 45.18 with Gemma Leadbetter dipping well under the 50 minute mark in 49.24. Sue Jeffrey finished soon after in 50.52, followed by Patti Lean in 52.45 and Jo Needham in 54.40. Jo Pennington also beat the hour in 57.45. Helen Paisley (61.10) was just quicker than Margaret Laurie in 61.12, with Louise Brown debuting in 61.42. Karen Hastings took 4 minutes off her PB to finish in 63.16 and Amanda Barnetson was happy to earn her first ever medal in 67.07, with Susan Graham just behind in 70.36. All DRC Ladies finished in the top two thirds of the field.

There was great support on route from many other runners such as club members Doug Brown and Danny Queen, and everybody enjoyed a great day out despite the typical Scottish summer weather.
