Buttermere Round
On Sunday 12thFebruary Ian Brown and Les Hill ran the 34K (21 miles) Buttermere Round that starts and finishes in Keswick....
The Buttermere Round race starts at the Moot Hall in the centre of Keswick and follows the road through Borrowdale to Seatoller. Distance markers are displayed every 5K and Les and Ian, running together in the early stages had 5K splits of 21.30 and 22.10 over the undulating initial 10K. The severity of the climb over Honister Pass during the next 5K explains why it took them 28 minutes to cover this section which even included a fast downhill run at the pace of around 5.15 min/mile. Shortly after 15K, Ian eased ahead of Les and both ran well to gain places during the second half that included another stiff climb over Newlands Pass. From the top of Newlands Pass it is mainly downhill back to the finish in Keswick except for a few testing inclines inside the last three miles, with Ian finishing 1st V55, 22nd overall, in 2 hours 40 minutes and 37 seconds and Les just over three minutes behind in 28th place in 2:43:56.
