DRC Virtual GP Update
Who would have thought we would be organising a Virtual GP? If you had suggested this a couple of years ago you would have got some funny looks. Even last year when COVID came along we thought give it a few months and we will be back at Nunholm for a run and a BBQ. Little did we know! This year to keep motivation and interest up we decided we would have some virtual races and these have proved to be very popular. Credit to Andy Dickson who suggested having a Team element as this has helped boost numbers.
After a 5K and a 5 mile event we have had 26 men and 15 ladies taking part in one or more events. This is as many as we would expect if these were actual races which is fantastic.
here have been some very good performances through-out the field with people matching or bettering their predicted times. We have club captain Nicola Hood setting a high standard as expected on the lady's side and she has maximum points from the first two races. Gemma Leadbetter has been training well and this is paying off as she is a close second and leads the way for F35 category. Mo Dickson continues to run really well and is sitting in 3rd palce with Anne not too far away. Sue Jeffery missed the first race but has good points from the 2nd and with it being best 5 from 6 events has a chance to climb up the table.
On the men's side Graham McLelland who joined just before COPVID kicked in has been in top form and again has maximum points. Colin Holden has been firing on all cylinders too and at 56 is putting some of us younger guys to shame.???? Will Nicholson who re-joined DRC this year is sitting joint third with Kev McQueen who is also leading the V50 category.
On the team front the 5k event was extremely close with a mere 4 seconds separating the first two teams. In fact there was just 3 mins and 6 sec separating the 9 pre-selected teams with the Team formerly known as fog....Cumulonimbus...a little further back. This team event really helped motivation!
By the time we got to the Virtual Holywood Stroll we had a massive entry of 42 meaning some quicks maths was required to work out teams. 7 teams of 6 was the answer and some head-scratching to get the teams balanced based on the predicted times. This time with the longer distance and larger teams the spread was a little more with just under 11 min from 1st team to 7th team.
