Simon Mortlock

WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHY?  I always jogged once a week or so since I was 16, it has only become my main hobby since turning 40.  (Started off rock climbing and mountaineering then moved through cycling.  I started running as I always feel better after being out in the fresh air; always go out when I’m feeling down.

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT DUMFRIES RUNNING CLUB?   Tuesday night outings and a drink in the bar afterwards.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WITH DUMFRIES RUNNING CLUB?   Odd events stand out.  The Lotus Hill race was very enjoyable last year, as was a winter 9 mile Tuesday run over the Craigs in the dark with no torches in the rain.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE IMPROVED (SPEED/HEALTH/CONFIDENCE)?    Made 90 minutes for a half marathon for the first time aged 40.  In previous efforts before joining the club I had always been around 1:45.  I’ve not started deteriorating yet (at 43)!!

FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?   Mabie Forest .

FAVOURITE TYPE OF RUNNING/DISTANCE?  Forests, hills.  My favourite race is the half marathon.

WEEKLY MILEAGE?   15-30 miles.

MOST SATISFYING RUN/PERFORMANCE?   Last year’s Dumfries Marathon, by best ever (only my second).
