Philip McCann

WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHY?  At university and then 23 years later – so 5 years this time around.  Initially I started because I wanted to get fit, then carried on as a hobby (something to do).

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT DUMFRIES RUNNING CLUB?   Other people to run with.  Also having a routine time for exercise.  Members also give me advice about various aspects of running.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WITH DUMFRIES RUNNING CLUB?   Running Brampton with club mates.  Encouragement to finish Dumfries half marathon 2 years ago by members of the club who were helping me.  This was my first (and last) half marathon.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE IMPROVED (SPEED/HEALTH/CONFIDENCE)?    Improvement not obvious as had injuries, on-set of asthma and training has not been regular.  However, running with the club pushes me in terms of distance and speed so gives me confidence that I have the potential for faster times if I trained more often.  I am aiming to run at least twice a week from now on.  I find it takes me a couple of days to recover from a run – and this puts me off – although I do know from about 3 years ago that the more I run, the less painful it will be afterwards.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?   I like a variety of places.

FAVOURITE TYPE OF RUNNING/DISTANCE?  Road running.  Not sure I can say a favorite distance. But prefer 10km to 10 miles.

WEEKLY MILEAGE?   On average and being honest – whatever I run on a Tuesday night, so 5, 6 or 7 miles! Sometimes I run out with the club and on a gym treadmill, but sometimes I miss Tuesday night so 5, 6 or 7 is a reasonable average with all these factors.

MOST SATISFYING RUN/PERFORMANCE?   I am genuinely satisfied when I complete a training run due to my irregular training.  For example, last night I did 7 miles and it was the first road run for 5 weeks!  The year before I joined the club I was pleased with all the races I competed in with my running mate who has since moved away from Dumfries – especially as I did not know I had asthma at the time.  I trained more regularly then as I had races to aim for.  Specifically would mention Troon 10K, the first time I did it – as this was my fastest 10K time.  But I am also pleased with Chorley and Brampton 10 miles, and finishing the Dumfries Half Marathon.  I suppose actually finishing the Gallovidian last year despite the discomfort and my slowest time ever was an achievement because I didn’t have inhalers then!!
